Model: MacBook Pro 14” (2021, M1 Pro, A2442)
After using a non-Apple original USB-C charger and the MacBook Pro was unable to power on. The customer visited the Genius Bar and was informed that the logic board needed to be replaced, with data loss.
Since the customer has no recent backup, they chose to have the logic board repaired at iCertified to try to keep the data.
Inspection begins:
After inspection by our technicians, it was found that the USB-C charging voltage was only 5V which should boosted to 20V. This indicates a potential issue with the USB-C charging components on the logic board.

After providing a repair quote to the customer, they decided to proceed with the repair.
Repair begins:
Measurements revealed abnormalities with the USB-C port near the power button, showing signs of burn marks and abnormal heating on the USB-C controller CD3217B12. The power rail PP5V_S2SW_USBC23 was shorted to ground.

After removing the USB-C controller, the power rail was still shorted to ground.

Using an infrared thermal imaging camera, it was observed that the USB-C 5V buck converter TPS62180 was experiencing abnormal heating.

After removing the USB-C 5V buck converter, the power rail returned to normal and no longer shorted to ground.

After soldering the USB-C controller and USB-C 5V buck converter, the MacBook was able to power on.

However, the USB-C port managed by this USB-C controller was unable to charge, while other USB-C ports and the MagSafe 3 port could charge normally.

Measurements revealed abnormal readings in the diode mode measurement of the USB-C configuration channel signal USBC2_CC1, indicating possible damage to the USB-C overvoltage protector TPD4S311.

Replacing the USB-C overvoltage protector resolved the charging issue.

After cleaning and installing the logic board, all functions were tested and found to be normal, without data loss.

Repair completed.
